The Kurds lives in a region often referred to as Kurdistan, an area that includes adjacent parts of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. Kurdish has it's roots in the northwestern Iranian, however little is known about them in the pre-Islamic times. According to a population study in 2001, Kurds, Armenians, Iranians, Jews, and other Mediterranean groups seem to share a common ancestry, and were from an old Mediterranean substratum, i.e. Hurrian and Hittite groups and that these peoples have no connection with an Aryan invasion which was supposed to have happened about 1200 BCE.
The language they speak is called "Kurdish Languange" which belongs to the western sub-group of the Iranian languages which themselves belong to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. Although Kurdish is not a unified language, its many dialects are interrelated and at the same time distinguishable from other western Iranian languages. Today, Kurdish is an official language in Iraq.
