The term Text message refers to the individual messages sent over Short Message Service (SMS) from mobile phones. Its the common term for the sending of "short" messages (originally 160 characters or fewer, including spaces). The individual messages are also called texts or SMS.

There's much of discussions about where it is possible to send free ringtones through text message or SMS. There's also a lot of sites who claim that they can send it thorough sms by using their site. In my own understanding, correct me if I am mistaken "Yes it is possible to send tones via text message only if your tones are monophonic, if not then they cannot be sent through text. Just in case you do not know there are 3 main types of ring tones, this are monophonic, polyphonic & real music (MP3, WAV or other format where the tone features both the voice and the instrument in the music). Monophonic is the oldest one which plays only one tone at a time. This is the type which you can send through text. For the other two you will need to use other service which includes MMS, WAP, infrared, or bluetooth.

The first place should always be your phone's network or carrier's website.
